Freelance Project

Project Overview

At the end of 2022 I was approached by Hurricanes Rugby to do some Freelance design work for the 2023 Super Rugby Season. While I completed a bunch of different design jobs and elements, my main project was designing the 2023 Commercial Handbook for the Hurricanes and Hurricanes Poua 2023 season launch. 

I had the privilege of being invited to the season launch day at the impeccable Wellington NZCIS training facilities. It was amazing to see my work being used and handed out to some iconic NZ brands.

Additionally to the Handbook, I was given the opportunity to create gift boxes given to sponsors, life-size player cut-outs and sponsor brand animations for LED strips that surrounded the field during games.

The Process

I was given a lot of creative freedom in this project to elevate the brand to refresh and appeal to a younger demographic. 

After doing a lot of research, I found that modern sports illustrations/graphics for other teams around the world were moving away from using busy textures/backgrounds. This pushed me into introducing more layered designs that are simple, yet eye-catching and effective. With this in mind, I introduced more block colours, gradients, shapes and shades to the collateral. This was to be able to match some of these top sporting teams while retaining the same level of professionalism.
